Haltcliffe Vermount

Born on the 22 May 2004, Haltcliffe Vermount, an embryo transfer calf, came into the world, a super calf out of the Haltcliffe herd’s top cow Renoncule 19-30-708-827, who was purchased in France as a fantastic 18 month old maiden heifer from the top herd of show man Mr Laleu. Her first two sons had already proved her to be a great breeder as well as a great-looking cow with Haltcliffe Umpire a son of Haltcliffe Novel selling for 18,000gns and then Haltcliffe Ullswater a son of Sympa, herd sire at Haltcliffe selling for 43,000gns.

Haltcliffe Vermount is a son of Penyrheol Sam who in turn is a son of Ronick Hawk, who in turn is a son of the great Broadmeadows Cannon, a bull purchased for the Haltcliffe herd as a 14-month-old bull at the Carlisle sale in Oct 1988 for 8,000gns top price that day. Vermount’s Sire, Penyrheol Sam, was purchased again at Carlisle in May 2003 for 13,000gns. Vermount was the only bull calf in the flush but he does have seven ET sisters. They are all retained in the Haltcliffe herd. He was always a very classy calf with great shape and character and it was soon apparent he was something very special.

He served about seven cows at Haltcliffe and semen was taken off him before he left home for the first time to go to the February Bull sale at Carlisle 2006.He weighed-in at 950 kilo’s the day before the show, the next day he won his Class in the judging before gaining the intermediate Champion and going on to take the overall champion of the show. But it was Saturday,18 February that all the records fell. Auctioneer David Thomlinson started the bidding at 10,000gns which quickly rose to 22,000gns where it appeared to have stopped, then two more men came in and the bidding went very quickly to 85,000gns. After that two more bids took it to the world record price of 100,000gns and the auctioneer’s hammer came down and Gary Swindlehurst, Farm manager for Proctors Farms, was the pround new owner of the best bull ever to leave the Haltcliffe herd.
